Dear Friends,
Joseph Pilates once said that “anyone who is stiff and out of shape at 30 is old, while someone who is supple and strong at 60 is still young!” Young or old, Pilates offers a way to improve pain, posture, and flexibility. It strengthens and tones and helps to realign the body into its intended position. “Even if you haven’t been active previously, it’s important to get started and stay active,” says Dr. Richard J. Hodes, director of the National Institute on Aging. “We know that people want to live as long as they possibly can. By independently exercising regularly and including more movement in their daily routine, (older) people can preserve their physical function which is the key to doing the everyday things they want to do.” So whether you are 30, 60, or anywhere else along the age continuum, consider the benefits of exercise, and especially Pilates!
There is much emphasis today on “core” strengthening. What is this exactly? The “Powerhouse” or “core” is the area from the bottom of the rib cage to a line across the hip joints in front and the base of the buttocks in back. It is the physical center of the body. “Core stability” is the ability to keep the pelvis and spine in the desired position while moving the limbs or the whole body through space. There are over 600 exercises in Pilates, and all of them emphasize strengthening or stabilizing the core. At Premier Pilates, our goal is to help our clients have healthier bodies through core strengthening and stabilizing. As Joe Pilates said, “The Pilates Method teaches you to be in control of your body and not at its mercy.”
November is the perfect month to practice gratitude. In the Bible, we read, “In ALL things give thanks…(1 Thessalonians 5:18)” Surely the author of that verse was deeply familiar with the many challenges and the frequent suffering that life brings our way. To be grateful, is to acknowledge that we are being given the opportunity to grow. I pray that we all find the courage to focus on the many things that are good in our lives and the strength to persevere with Grace.
With much gratitude for all of you,
Jan Thorne
